The 72-year-old Lata was surrounded by members of his family when he passed away at a Boksburg hospital in the East of Johannesburg on the morning of 16 April 2026. He was only a month away from his 73rd birthday.

His son Charles Lata said his father, a former midfielder and striker, spent more than a decade at Benoni United and his erstwhile teammates will play a role during the memorial service and at the funeral this week.

The memorial service will be held at the Church of Christ at 4252/3 Msibi Street, Daveyton, on Thursday, 23 April 2026 from 14h00. Charles confirmed that his father will be buried on Saturday, 25 April 2026 at the Christ Redeemer Anglican Church in Daveyton. The service starts at 07h00.

His passing is a huge loss and we as SAFA offer our deepest condolences. We join his family in mourning his passing.

May his soul Rest in Peace.
